Jeremiah 44:27 meaning and explanation

I am watching over them for harm and not for good, and every man of Judah who is in the land of Egypt will meet his end by sword or famine, until they are finished off.

Jeremiah 44:27, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jeremiah is speaking to the Jews who fled to Egypt after Jerusalem fell, and in verse 27 God answers their defiant vow to keep burning incense to the Queen of Heaven. The phrase echoes Jeremiah's own call, where God said he was watching to uproot and tear down as well as to plant (Jeremiah 1:10).
