Jeremiah 48:2 meaning and explanation

There is no longer praise for Moab; in Heshbon they devise evil against her: ‘Come, let us cut her off from nationhood.’ You too, O people of Madmen, will be silenced; the sword will pursue you.

Jeremiah 48:2, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD speaks through Jeremiah against Moab, Israel's neighbor east of the Dead Sea, in the years before Babylon's armies moved through the region. Heshbon was a Moabite town, and its name sounds like a Hebrew word for plotting, so the prophet makes the place itself conspire against Moab: the cry goes up to cut her off from nationhood.
