Jeremiah 8:16 meaning and explanation

The snorting of enemy horses is heard from Dan. At the sound of the neighing of mighty steeds, the whole land quakes. They come to devour the land and everything in it, the city and all who dwell in it.

Jeremiah 8:16, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jeremiah speaks as the Babylonians approach, and verse 16 pictures the terror before the siege: the snorting and neighing of enemy horses heard from Dan, the northernmost city of Israel, the direction invaders always came from. The sound alone makes the whole land quake, and the prophet describes the army as coming to devour land, city and people.
