Jeremiah 8:22 meaning and explanation

Is there no balm in Gilead? Is no physician there? Why then has the health of the daughter of my people not been restored?

Jeremiah 8:22, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jeremiah speaks these words as grief over Judah's coming destruction under Babylon. Gilead, a region east of the Jordan, was known for a resin used as medicine, so the question is rhetorical: the remedy exists, yet the wound goes untreated.
