Jeremiah 9:1 meaning and explanation

Oh, that my head were a spring of water, and my eyes a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night over the slain daughter of my people.

Jeremiah 9:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jeremiah speaks these words as God's prophet in the last years before Jerusalem fell to Babylon in 586 BC. The verse opens a lament over the coming destruction, and the "daughter of my people" is a Hebrew idiom for Jerusalem and its people, not a single woman.
