Each one betrays his friend; no one tells the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they wear themselves out committing iniquity.

Jeremiah is speaking as God's prophet to the people of Judah shortly before Babylon destroyed Jerusalem. In verses 4 and 5 the LORD describes a society where trust has collapsed: neighbors, brothers and friends all deceive one another.
