The disciples are responding to Jesus just after he has told them that Lazarus has "fallen asleep." They are thinking of ordinary sleep, a good sign in a sick person, and they take it as reason for hope. John explains in the next verse that Jesus was speaking of death, a common way of speaking about it in the Bible.
