John 16:21 meaning and explanation

A woman has pain in childbirth because her time has come; but when she brings forth her child, she forgets her anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.

John 16:21, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus speaks these words to his disciples on the night before his arrest, preparing them for grief that will seem unbearable. He uses an everyday image: a woman in labor, whose pain is real and sharp because her hour has come, yet is swallowed up in joy once the child is born.
