So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.

Explanation preview
Jesus speaks these words to his disciples on the night before his death. They are grieving because he has said he is leaving, and they do not understand his talk of “a little while.” He answers with the picture of a woman in labor: her pain is real, but the birth of her child turns anguish into joy so complete that the pain is forgotten.
