John 16:33 meaning and explanation

I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!”

John 16:33, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus speaks these closing words to his disciples on the night before his death, after warning them of persecution, sorrow and his departure. The peace he offers is not the absence of trouble but a settled confidence rooted in him, set against the tribulation they will certainly meet in the world.
