John 18:5 meaning and explanation
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. Jesus said, “I am He.” And Judas His betrayer was standing there with them.
John 18:5, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Jesus is in the garden where he has often met his disciples, and Judas arrives with soldiers and temple officers carrying torches and weapons. When they name Jesus of Nazareth, he answers with the Greek phrase egō eimi, “I am,” which echoes God’s self-revelation in the Old Testament and may carry more weight than a simple identification.
