John 18:6 meaning and explanation
When Jesus said, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
John 18:6, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Jesus has just stepped out to meet the soldiers and temple officers who came to arrest him, and he identifies himself with the words "I am He." In Greek this is simply ego eimi, "I am," the same phrase used of God in the Greek Old Testament, and John likely intends readers to hear that echo. The reaction is striking: the armed crowd draws back and falls to the ground, as though the one they came to seize has momentarily overwhelmed them.
