John 21:20 meaning and explanation

Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them. He was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper to ask, “Lord, who is going to betray You?”

John 21:20, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus has just told Peter he will die a martyr’s death and said, “Follow Me.” Peter turns and sees the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, the same disciple who at the Last Supper leaned back against Jesus and asked who would betray him. The narrator identifies this figure by that earlier scene so readers recognize him as the witness behind this Gospel.
