Peter has just been restored after denying Jesus three times, and Jesus has told him plainly, "Follow Me." Turning, Peter sees the disciple whom Jesus loved, the one who reclined against Jesus at the supper, and asks what will happen to him. The question is natural but it shifts Peter's gaze from his own calling to someone else's.
