Jonah 2:6 meaning and explanation

To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God!

Jonah 2:6, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jonah is praying from inside the fish, describing his descent as a journey to the very bottom of the world. In the ancient imagination the mountains' roots reached down to the underworld, and the earth's bars are the gates of Sheol, the realm of the dead.
