Joshua 15 lists the towns allotted to the clans of Judah, and this verse falls within the catalogue of cities in the Negev, the dry southern region toward Edom. Eltolad and Chesil are otherwise little known, but Hormah carries memory: Israel had earlier been defeated there after disobeying the LORD and trying to enter the land from the south.
