Joshua 22:23 meaning and explanation

If we have built for ourselves an altar to turn away from Him and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, or to sacrifice fellowship offerings on it, may the LORD Himself hold us accountable.

Joshua 22:23, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The eastern tribes are answering Phinehas and the ten chiefs, who came to Gilead ready to treat their altar as rebellion. In verse 23 they accept the charge in principle: if the altar were meant for burnt offerings, grain offerings or fellowship offerings, they invite the LORD Himself to hold them accountable.
