Joshua 8:11 meaning and explanation
Then all the troops who were with him marched up and approached the city. They arrived in front of Ai and camped to the north of it, with the valley between them and the city.

Joshua has just been told by God not to fear and to attack Ai a second time, after Israel's earlier defeat there because of Achan's sin. Here he moves the main army into position: the troops march up, approach the city, and camp north of Ai with a valley separating them from it.
