Now Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set up an ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city.

Joshua is positioning troops for the second attack on Ai, after Israel's first attempt failed because of Achan's sin. The main force camps north of the city, while this smaller group of about five thousand hides west of Ai, between Ai and Bethel, ready to seize the city once its defenders are drawn out.
