The narrator sums up the cycle that followed Joshua's death, when the next generation of Israelites turned from the LORD. Verse 13 restates the charge of verse 12: forsaking the God who brought them out of Egypt and serving Baal, the Canaanite storm and fertility god, along with the Ashtoreths, female deities worshiped alongside him.
