Judges 3:4 meaning and explanation

These nations were left to test the Israelites, to find out whether they would keep the commandments of the LORD, which He had given their fathers through Moses.

Judges 3:4, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The narrator explains why God allowed hostile nations to remain in the land after Joshua's generation. The testing is not because God lacks knowledge; the Hebrew verb nasah, to test or try, describes circumstances that reveal what is already in a heart, as with Abraham and the binding of Isaac.
