Judges 8:22 meaning and explanation

Then the Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us—you and your son and grandson—for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.”

Judges 8:22, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

After the rout of Midian, the Israelites ask Gideon to found a dynasty: he, his son and his grandson would rule them, and their stated reason is that he saved them from Midian. The request sounds like gratitude, but it treats a deliverer as a king and credits a man with a rescue the chapter repeatedly attributes to the LORD.
