Leviticus 18:9 meaning and explanation

You must not have sexual relations with your sister, either your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether she was born in the same home or elsewhere.

Leviticus 18:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

In this verse God, speaking through Moses to the Israelites at Mount Sinai, forbids sexual relations with a sister. The wording covers a sister born to the same father or the same mother, and it applies whether she was raised in the same household or elsewhere, so distance or a different upbringing does not change the relationship.
