Explanation preview

Luke opens his Gospel by anchoring the story in real history: Herod the Great ruled Judea as a client king under Rome. Zechariah was a priest of the division of Abijah, one of the twenty four rotating groups of priests, and Elizabeth, like him, came from priestly stock, a descendant of Aaron.
