Explanation preview
Jesus has just entered Jerusalem and gone into the temple courts, where merchants were selling animals and changing money in the outer court. Quoting Isaiah 56:7, He names God's intention for the temple as a house of prayer for all peoples, then borrows Jeremiah 7:11, where the prophet accused worshipers of treating the temple as a hideout while living as they pleased.
