Malachi 2:16 meaning and explanation

“For I hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel. “He who divorces his wife covers his garment with violence,” says the LORD of Hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit and do not break faith.

Malachi 2:16, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Malachi speaks to a community back from exile whose men are divorcing the wives of their youth, apparently to marry women who worship other gods. The LORD names himself as witness to those marriage covenants and says plainly that he hates divorce.
