Mark has just recorded Jesus silencing the Pharisees and Herodians, and now a third group steps forward. The Sadducees were the priestly, aristocratic party, and Mark states plainly that they denied the resurrection, since they held only the five books of Moses as authoritative and found no rising of the dead there.
