Matthew places this scene on the same day as the earlier challenges in the temple courts, during the final week of Jesus' ministry. The Sadducees were a leading priestly group who accepted only the five books of Moses as Scripture and denied the resurrection of the dead, so they approach Jesus with a question meant to expose what they saw as an absurd belief.
