Mark has just described Jesus withdrawing to the sea with a great crowd from Galilee, Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and around Tyre and Sidon (verses 7 and 8). Verse 10 explains why He asked for a boat to be kept ready: the healings were so many that the sick kept pressing toward Him to touch Him, seeking healing through contact.
