Mark 7:37 meaning and explanation

The people were utterly astonished and said, “He has done all things well! He makes even the deaf hear and the mute speak!”

Mark 7:37, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The crowd has just watched Jesus heal a deaf man who could barely speak, in the Decapolis, a largely Gentile region. His method was unusual: he took the man aside, put fingers in his ears, spit, touched his tongue, sighed, and said Ephphatha, Aramaic for “Be opened.” Their declaration echoes Isaiah’s promise that God himself would unstop deaf ears.
