Mark 8:35 meaning and explanation

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and for the gospel will save it.

Mark 8:35, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus speaks these words to the crowd and his disciples on the road near Caesarea Philippi, just after he has told them plainly that the Son of Man must suffer and be killed. He is redefining what it means to follow him: not triumph but self denial, pictured as taking up a cross.
