Matthew 16:25 meaning and explanation
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
Matthew 16:25, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Jesus speaks these words to his disciples just after telling them that following him means taking up a cross. In this setting, "life" translates the Greek psychē, which can also mean "soul" or "self." The saying is a paradox: clutching at your own life, making survival and self-interest the goal, ends in losing what matters most, while releasing your life for Jesus' sake leads to finding it.
