From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subject to violence, and the violent lay claim to it.

Jesus is speaking to the crowds about John the Baptist, who has asked from prison whether Jesus is the promised one. In verse 12 he describes the period from John's ministry onward as one in which the kingdom of heaven is met with force, and forceful people try to seize it.
