Matthew 14:1, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Matthew opens this chapter by placing Jesus' ministry against the court of Herod Antipas, called tetrarch because he ruled a quarter of his father Herod the Great's territory, Galilee and Perea. Reports of Jesus' teaching and miracles had reached the ruler, and the verses that follow show his guilty reaction: he decides Jesus must be John the Baptist raised from the dead.
