Matthew 16:17 meaning and explanation

Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by My Father in heaven.

Matthew 16:17, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus speaks these words to Simon Peter at Caesarea Philippi, just after Peter has confessed him as the Christ, the Son of the living God (verses 15 to 16). Jesus calls him blessed and says this insight did not come from "flesh and blood," a Hebrew idiom for human beings, but was revealed by the Father in heaven.
