Matthew 16:18 meaning and explanation
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
Matthew 16:18, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Jesus speaks these words to Simon just after he confesses him as the Christ, the Son of the living God. The name Peter comes from the Greek petros, meaning rock, and Jesus plays on it: this confession of faith is the rock on which he will build his church.
