Jesus speaks this line as the closing point of a parable about a servant forgiven an enormous debt who then refuses mercy to a fellow servant over a small one. The master hands him to the jailers, and Jesus applies the story directly to his disciples, who had just asked about greatness and been taught about humility, welcome and restoring a brother.
