Matthew 18:6 meaning and explanation

But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

Matthew 18:6, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus has just placed a child among the disciples as a living picture of humility, and he now warns anyone who would trip up "these little ones who believe in Me." The Greek word skandalon means a trap or stumbling block, something that makes another fall into sin. The millstone is a large stone turned by a donkey, and drowning was a known form of execution in the ancient world, so the image is deliberately severe.
