Matthew 21:13 meaning and explanation

And He declared to them, “It is written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer.’ But you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”

Matthew 21:13, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus has just entered Jerusalem and gone into the temple courts, where merchants and money changers had set up business in the outer court. Quoting Isaiah 56:7, He names God's intention for the temple as a house of prayer for all peoples, then borrows Jeremiah 7:11 to call the trade a den of robbers, a hideout that gave false security while worship was neglected.
