Matthew 21:33 meaning and explanation

Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a tower. Then he rented it out to some tenants and went away on a journey.

Matthew 21:33, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus tells this parable in the temple courts during his final week in Jerusalem, addressing the chief priests and elders who have just questioned his authority. The landowner's careful preparation, a wall, a winepress and a watchtower, echoes Isaiah 5, where Israel is pictured as the Lord's vineyard.
