Matthew 23:20 meaning and explanation

So then, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.

Matthew 23:20, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus is speaking to the crowds and His disciples about the scribes and Pharisees, who taught that an oath sworn by the temple or altar meant little while one sworn by the gold or the gift on it was binding. In verse 20 He corrects this casuistry: to swear by the altar is to swear by it and by everything on it, since the altar is what makes the gift sacred.
