Matthew 23:21 meaning and explanation

And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the One who dwells in it.

Matthew 23:21, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus is speaking to the crowds and His disciples about the scribes and Pharisees, who taught that an oath sworn by the temple's gold was binding while an oath sworn by the temple itself was not. In verse 21 He corrects this reasoning: to swear by the temple is to swear by it and by the One who dwells in it, since God's presence is what makes the temple sacred.
