Matthew 27:57 meaning and explanation

When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who himself was a disciple of Jesus.

Matthew 27:57, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Joseph of Arimathea appears only at Jesus' burial in all four Gospels, and Matthew introduces him here as a rich man from a Judean town, a disciple of Jesus, though John says he kept it quiet out of fear. Evening marks the start of the Sabbath, so the burial had to happen quickly before the holy day began.
