Matthew has just told how the chief priests and elders bribed the soldiers guarding the tomb to say that Jesus' disciples stole the body while they slept (verses 11 to 14). Verse 15 reports that the soldiers took the money and spread that story, and Matthew adds that it was still being repeated among the Jews when he wrote.
