Later, as Jesus was dining at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with Him and His disciples.

Matthew has just left his tax booth to follow Jesus, and now he hosts a meal in his own house. Tax collectors were despised as collaborators with Rome and often as dishonest, and "sinners" was a broad label for those outside respectable religious society.
