Nahum 1:14 meaning and explanation

The LORD has issued a command concerning you, O Nineveh: “There will be no descendants to carry on your name. I will cut off the carved image and cast idol from the house of your gods; I will prepare your grave, for you are contemptible.”

Nahum 1:14, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Nahum is a prophet of Judah, and here God speaks directly to Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, the empire that had crushed and terrorized the ancient Near East. The sentence is a formal decree: no heir to carry the royal name, no dynasty to continue.
