From Kohath came the clans of the Amramites, the Izharites, the Hebronites, and the Uzzielites; these were the clans of the Kohathites.

Numbers 3 organizes the Levites for service at the tabernacle, and this verse lists the four clans descended from Kohath, one of Levi's three sons. The Kohathites camped on the south side of the tabernacle and were entrusted with the most sacred furnishings, including the ark, the table, the lampstand and the altars (verses 29 to 31).
