Numbers 3 describes the Levites being set apart to serve the tabernacle in place of Israel's firstborn, who belong to the LORD because he spared them in Egypt. Verses 46 to 50 deal with a shortfall: there were 273 more firstborn Israelites than Levites, so a redemption price of five shekels each was collected, totaling 1,365 shekels.
