Moses is distributing the gifts the tribal leaders brought for the newly set up tabernacle. The Merarites, one of the three Levite clans, were responsible for the heavier structural parts of the tent, its frames, posts and bases, so they received four carts and eight oxen, twice what the Gershonites got for lighter curtains.
