In Proverbs 7 a father urges his son to treat wisdom and understanding as close family, a sister and a kinsman (verses 1 to 4). Verse 5 gives the purpose of that bond: wisdom will guard him from the adulteress, literally the strange or forbidden woman, and from her smooth words.
